British Air Force Typhoon fighter aircraft have operated alongside French aircraft in a joint strike on an subterranean weapons facility in Syrian territory operated by the IS group, as stated by the UK's MoD.
The site, pinpointed through intelligence, was thought to be housing weapons and explosive materials, the release indicated, and was situated in mountains just north of the ancient city of Palmyra in central Syria.
"The RAF jets used Paveway IV guided bombs to target a number of access tunnels leading to the site... early reports suggest the objective was successfully hit," officials stated.
There was no evidence of any harm to civilians in the strike on Saturday evening and each participating jet made a safe return, the MoD added.
The Typhoon FGR4s were backed up by a Voyager refuelling tanker.
IS - also known as ISIS - imposed militant control over large swathes of Iraq and Syria prior to its 2019 collapse.
"This action shows British leadership, and determination to stand shoulder to shoulder with allied nations, to eradicate any revival of Daesh and their violent and radical beliefs in the Middle East," UK Defence Secretary the Defence Secretary said.
British military aircraft have conducted overwatch operations over Syria to "forestall any attempted comeback" of IS following its defeat at the Baghuz confrontation in the year 2019, the MoD reported.
"I extend gratitude to every member of our armed forces participating in this operation for their skill and their bravery," Healey commented. "They were among a great many British troops stationed over the festive period. This mission, to eliminate dangerous terrorists who endanger our way of life, shows how British military are prepared to act, continuously, ensuring Britain's security within its borders and influential overseas."
In December, the United States armed forces carried out what it termed a "massive strike" on IS targets in the country, after an attack killed two US servicemembers and a civilian interpreter in Palmyra.
The U.N. reports IS still maintains roughly 5-7 thousand militants in Iraq and Syria.
